Cookieless analytics

What does cookieless website analytics mean?

Cookieless website analytics measures website use without setting analytics cookies. The term describes one tool's measurement method, not the legal state of an entire website.

A cookie is data stored in a browser that can be used to recognize the same browser later. Cookieless analytics does not need an analytics cookie for that purpose. Implementations can still differ in the request data they process and the fields they store in an event.

What to check in an analytics tool

  • Does the tracker set analytics cookies?
  • Does it use other browser storage such as sessionStorage?
  • What network and device data is processed during a request?
  • Which fields remain in the analytics event?

How Haimoo Analytics works

The Haimoo Analytics tracker does not set analytics cookies. It may use sessionStorage for a temporary browser-session identifier and sends the page path, referrer and available UTM parameters.

The collection endpoint processes the request IP transiently for rate limiting, coarse location, bot classification and visitor estimation. A raw IP address is not stored in analytics event records.

Cookieless does not settle consent for the whole website

A website can have other cookies, embeds or tools. The behavior of one analytics tool therefore cannot decide the website's cookie banner or other obligations by itself. Assess the website as a whole.
