Website analytics basics: pages, sources and goals

Website analytics shows page volumes, traffic sources and goal counts for a selected period. A useful report starts with one question and keeps separate numbers separate.

A pageview says that a page path was opened. The referrer and UTM parameters help classify a visit's source or campaign. A goal count says how many events matched the definition in the selected period.

Three useful questions

  • Which sources and campaigns bring visits?
  • Which pages work as landing pages and which pages are opened most?
  • How many defined goal events are found in the selected period?

UTM parameters name the campaign

UTM source names the source, medium the channel type and campaign the campaign. Content and term can distinguish a creative variant or search term. Use consistent names so the report does not fragment across spellings.

Goal counts are a separate view

The current dashboard shows source and page volumes separately from site-wide goal counts for the selected period. It does not show which source or page produced a goal. That comparison requires separate analysis.
